
On behalf of the Trans-Allegheny Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Pat Goodwin, Treasurer, presented the Flag of the United States of America special recognition certificate to a Weston, West Virginia businessman, Joseph “Joe” Pickens, Friday, January 22, 2021.The NSDAR recognizes businesses and individuals for their respectful usage of the Flag of the United States of America that has for over 100 years promoted a deep patriotic sense of respect for our Flag and Nation. Trans-Allegheny Chapter Daughters selected Mr. Pickens as this year’s recipient of the certificate because, for twenty-two years, he has respectfully displayed the Flag of the United States outside his business, Pickens Automotive.
Pickens, a 1970 graduate of Cowen High School in Webster County, is a retired United States Army veteran with twenty-one years of service in the Jane Lew based U.S. Army Reserve, 1st Platoon of 363rd Military Police Company.. After serving from 1972 until 1993, Pickens retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served our country during Operation Desert Storm when he became disabled during the Gulf Wars.
He has followed a legacy of military patriots led by his father, George Lawrence Pickens, a World War II veteran, and older brother, Thomas Oren Pickens, who served in the U.S. in the Vietnam War.
Pickens is married to Susan Ballard Pickens. They are the parents of two sons, Joe and Tim.
